Win Tickets To Sleep!
In stoner rock circles, San Jose's Sleep would definitely not be considered half-baked...these dudes take their weed and their riffage dead seriously, as evidenced by their hour-long, one-song, one-riff tribute to the herb, Dopesmoker, which their label, London Records, deemed "unmarketable" and refused to release way back in 1995. Since Sleep's contract with the label specified "complete artistic freedom," the band denied the label's demands to alter the album, and this led to a standoff resulting in the band's breakup. Indie label Tee Pee Records finally released Dopesmoker in 2003 (a Southern Lord deluxe reissue followed in 2012) and it was widely hailed as a benchmark of stoner/doom metal. Sleep reunited in 2009 and announced last year that they were working on a new record.
