In Rotation: Mark's Album Picks - 6/21/09
POSTED BY Rod ON Mon Jun 22, 12:37 PM
West Seattle Easy Street vinyl buyer/After Hours booker/counterman Mark Baker has a few spare minutes each day to listen to music when he's not bouncing around the store juggling various tasks. Here are his current picks and some samples for your listening pleasure!
"Can't stop playing the Light in the Attic's Record Store Day comp - This LP Crashes Hard Drives. It's the fucking truth. A computer wouldn't know what to do with this mix of world, psyche, garage and gospel. Play the song "Sam" by Pisces (now also available from the Numero Group on their lastest release) really loud." (Note: This LP Crashes Hard Drives is no longer available.)
"The Dirty Projectors' new one, Bitte Orca, was quite pleasing this morning. Interesting time changes and artiness but always melodious."
Dirty Projectors - "Remade Horizon"
"I keep going back and forth between Double Dagger's two releases Ragged Rubble and More (Thrill Jockey). Very excited for their show at the Comet July 5. If people don't go crazy, I'll make them."
Double Dagger - "Vivre Sans Temps Mort"
"The new Portland Cello Project's Thao and Justin Power Sessions on Kill Rock Stars is quite beautiful. I'm a little disappointed in the interpretations (or lack thereof) on the Thao songs, but that's because I love her. Seriously. If only she'd remember me even though we've spoken several times at length.... The Justin Power songs play like Horse Feathers - pretty vocals and delicate arrangements. They're probably a bit too moody for everyday listening, but good songs nonetheless."
Portland Cello Project - "Tallymarks"
"Todd Snider's The Excitement Plan is a bit of a let down, but he's one of my favorite songwriters. Don't read into the words too literally there...it's still a good record. The songs are killer, but had I not heard them live first, I probably wouldn't think so. The production seems meant for old guys - again, don't read too literally. It's not necessarily a negative attribute; it just doesn't suit Todd. Give the man a guitar, a harmonica and a mic - leave the electric piano for Dylan."
Todd Snider - "America's Favorite Pastime"
"Sonic Youth - The Eternal. Do I need to say more than it's Sonic-fucking-Youth?"
