New Release Round-Up 08-21-15
WILCO - Star Wars - Anti
Produced by Jeff Tweedy and Tom Schick, the ninth release was a surprise free release on the Chicago band's website for a limited time. Even by Wilco's adventurous standards, Star Wars is possibly the most unusual, exploratory work of the band’s existence.
DR. DRE - Compton - Interscope Records
Its official, The Doctor is back with a masterful body of work, dedicated to the people of the city where he came from: Compton. This is Dr. Dre's first new album since 2001. Free t-shirt with in-store purchase while supplies last.
GHOST - Meliora - Loma Vista
Sweden's Ghost is back with their highly anticipated third album, Meliora. Steeped in subversive themes of humanism, counterculture and anti-establishmentarianism, the album was produced by Klas Ahlund, mixed by Andy Wallace, and is their heaviest and most melodic project to date. Lead singer Papa Emeritus II has been 'let go' and will be replaced by the younger, more powerful Papa Emeritus III, who expertly leads his Ghouls through ten scorching tracks, including "Cirice," which means church in Old English and is an ode to institutions inventing the problem so that they can offer the solution.
THE FRATELLIS - Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied - Cooking Vinyl
The Fratellis are back, toting a vibrant, typically tune-rich new album, Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied. They’re also back from a year-long tour. Another one. The trio spent much of 2013 and 2014 gigging internationally. The momentum, again, still, was with Jon (vocals, guitar, piano), Barry (bass) and Mince Fratelli (drums). Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied, Fratellis’ fourth album, is an eleven-song tour de force, recorded in Los Angeles with Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air), producer-architect of both their debut album and of Jon’s solo album Psycho Jukebox.
NATHANIEL RATELIFF & THE NIGHT SWEATS - Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats - Fantasy
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats practically explodes with deep, primal and ecstatic soulfulness. This stunning work isn't just soul stirring, it's also soul baring, and the combination is absolutely devastating to behold. You don't just listen to this record you experience it. So it's entirely fitting that the self-titled album will bear the iconic logo of Stax Records, because at certain moments Rateliff seems to be channeling soul greats like Otis Redding and Sam & Dave. But as this gifted multi-instrumentalist honors the legacy of the legendary Memphis label, he's also setting out into audacious new territory.
BUICK 6 - Plays Well With Others - Highway 20 Records
Lucinda William's featured band which includes Butch Norton, David Sutton and Stuart Mathis, who have individually worked with artists such as Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, The Wallflowers and Sara Bareilles. Plays Well With Others was recorded and mixed by Grammy-award winning producer David Bianco.
